The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, The world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas; and established it on the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false; and do not swear deceitfully. They will receive blessing from the LORD, and vindication from the God of their salvation. Such is the company of those who seek Him; who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. Who is the King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in; Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts; he is the King of glory. PSALM 24 Who is this King of glory?
We’ve all had those times when we’ve known we were part of a significant conversation. We know when we’re in the midst that something eternal is going on. Ancient mothers and fathers of the faith have referred to these times where eternity touches time as a “thin place.” I love Psalm 24, the way it begins with clear understanding, absolute truth. The earth is the Lord’s, all that’s in it, and everyone who is on it – that’s plain truth. He is Creator, we are creature. That beginning, that foundation, is the wonderful starting point for us if we want to ascend the hill of the LORD and be in the company of those who seek Him. As we seek his face, we lift our heads so that the King of glory may come in. It’s an act of humility, of turning our neck, of realizing our creatureliness. What a blessing it is to realize, to come to an understanding of how very small we are and how totally other and magnificent our Creator God is. How amazing it is that this magnificent and mighty King of glory may come into us, into our lives, and bring order and holiness. Lives dominated by this King of glory are radiant – in the midst of our ordinary lives. Conversations occurring within the company of those who seek this King of glory are invitations to enter joyous company and thin places where we are encouraged to see truth and live in it. I’m so looking forward to being with you on January 26 at our luncheon. May we see many thin places as we meet together throughout this year. May we seek, turn our heads, realize the magnificence of our God, and our company call one another to lift up our souls to what is true.
