All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
— Timothy 3:16

Without a doubt, the way in which God whispers most to us is through His Word. Sometimes, He whispers instructions or reproof; often, He whispers encouragement and love. There are also those times when His Spirit whispers a personal message to our spirit that may not have a chapter and verse reference but is equally as real. Just how do we hear those whispers, and what are some of the noises that crowd them out?

So many strange voices cutter our world today. The whispers of the multitude seem to crowd out the whisper of our Shepherd: "...the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out... he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow..." (John 10:1-5).

In the midst of the clamorning voices, we must not fail to sit in silence at the feet of Jesus to hear His whisper. Although the sheep do not follow the stranger's voice, they can often hear him whisper messages of doubt, confusion, discouragement, strife, or hurt---so much so that the collection of his whispers become a roar.

Peter tells us that our "...adversity the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). We must not allow our hearing to become so dull that the Good Shepherd's voice becomes strange to us. For it is only the whisper of our Shepherd that can silence the stranger's voice.

Let the Good Shepherd speak to you; allow His whisper to silence the noise that may be cluttering your mind. Read Jeremiah 29:11
